A special event under the patronage of the President of Ukraine’s Office – the first of its kind since the full-scale invasion. Forum organizers:
- The Office of the President of Ukraine
- The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine
- The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine
- The Ukrainian National Intellectual Property and Innovation Office (UKRNOIVI/IP Office)
On World Intellectual Property Day, the world celebrates music. Ukraine celebrates its music as a weapon, as a force of economic and cultural power.
On May 1, the one-day national forum-dialogue “Ukrainian Music Industry: Listen, Defend What’s Yours” will bring together renowned artists, performers, leaders of key government institutions, industry stakeholders, and experts. The goal is not only to share ideas and pose questions but to take unified action—to develop and defend the Ukrainian music industry from the aggressive cultural and informational policies of the aggressor state, Russia.
This forum is part of World IP Day 2025, dedicated by the World Intellectual Property Organization to the theme “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP”.
Opening the event will be Olena Kovalska, Deputy Head of the President’s Office of Ukraine, and Halyna Hryhorenko, First Deputy Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine.
Panel discussions will include Ukrainian MPs, government ministry leaders, Ukraine’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest, Kateryna Pavlenko from the band GO-A, the leader of the band “Antytila,” Taras Topolia, representatives from the “Cultural Descent” initiative — Kolya Serha and Myroslav Kuvaldyn, Anastasiia Obraztsova, Head of the Ukrainian Cultural Fund (UCF), CEO of TAVR Records, Valerii Saskovets, and other prominent figures from Ukraine’s music industry.
The planned panel discussions include:
- The State of Ukraine’s Music Industry: Current Situation, Challenges, Strategy — Presentation of the “Music Industry Foresight of Ukraine 2035” study.
- Royalties as a Driver of the Industry — A special focus on the role of collective management organizations for copyright and related rights in Ukraine.
- Monetizing Music Products—Generating Revenue and Protecting Rights.
- Countering Russian Music Expansion: Challenges and Solutions.
The conclusions from these panel discussions will play a pivotal role in guiding the legislative efforts and national work of Parliament, the Government, and every member of the Ukrainian music industry.
The forum will feature open discussions about the key components of Ukraine’s music industry—from a critical assessment of the primary sources of income for authors and artists, the realities of the royalty system, and challenges in collective rights management, to current strategies for protecting domestic music from Russian appropriation.
Each topic discussed is essential in the context of the growing demand for high-quality, popular Ukrainian music that reflects and promotes national identity and cultural values. This forum represents a unique opportunity to collaboratively find solutions to the vulnerabilities facing Ukraine’s music industry.
Additionally, the forum will explore the directions and actions needed for the upcoming year to achieve the objectives of the “Cultural Development Strategy for Ukraine until 2030”, which was approved by the Government last month. There will also be discussions on changes to intellectual property legislation being developed to implement EU law provisions within the music sector.
The event will be streamed online, and a link will be provided.
As attendance is limited, those who do not receive an offline invitation will be provided with a link to join the online broadcast, with the opportunity to ask questions to the speakers live.
