Kharkiv Opera to open its 150th anniversary season with the legendary opera “Aeneid”

On September 12 at 5:00 PM, the Kharkiv National Opera will open its milestone 150th theatrical season with “Aeneid”, the legendary opera by Mykola Lysenko, marking a powerful launch to the year. The production is brought to life by a creative team including Dmytro Morozov, Zhanna Chepela, Kostiantyn Ponomariov, Oleksii Chernikin, Kostiantyn Tomilchenko, Taisiia Poda, and Svitlana Zmieieva.

The opera “Aeneid” was first staged on November 23, 1910 in Kyiv. Another notable production was staged in 1959 at the Kyiv Opera House, directed by Volodymyr Skliarenko and conducted by Vasyl Kharchenko, though it remained in the repertoire for only a short time. For decades, no other productions were known — until recently, when Dmytro Morozov, the theatre’s chief conductor, discovered a handwritten score in the Kharkiv Opera’s library. It featured a rarely performed orchestration by Borys Liatoshynskyi, with a note on one of the orchestral parts: “Final rehearsal — January 11, 1941”.

In the new production directed by Zhanna Chepela and conducted by Dmytro Morozov, “Aeneid” becomes an opera about all of us. The journey undertaken by its characters unexpectedly transforms into a personal journey of self-discovery — one that promises to be filled with surprising revelations.
