1,147 cultural heritage sites have been damaged in Ukraine due to russian aggression

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications (МCSC) continues to document the damage to cultural heritage sites in Ukraine caused by russian aggression. According to information provided by regional and Kyiv City military administrations, in August, the total number of affected cultural heritage sites in the regions increased by 51, bringing the total to 1,147 sites.

Among them, 120 are of national importance, 944 of local importance, and 83 newly discovered sites.

Repeated strikes on previously damaged cultural heritage sites occurred in the Kherson region. New damages were recorded in Donetsk, Kherson, and Sumy regions.

To date, cultural heritage sites in 18 regions and Kyiv have suffered damage, including: Kharkiv region – 314, Kherson – 152, Donetsk – 155, Odesa – 116, Chernihiv – 69, Kyiv region and the city of Kyiv – 83, Zaporizhzhia – 52, Mykolaiv – 45, Dnipropetrovsk – 40, Lviv – 36, Luhansk – 31, Sumy – 28, Khmelnytskyi – 10, Poltava – 6, Vinnytsia – 4, Zhytomyr – 4, Kirovohrad – 1, Cherkasy – 1.

As of the end of August 2024, almost the entire Luhansk region and significant parts of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Kherson regions remain under temporary occupation, making it impossible to accurately assess the number of damaged cultural heritage sites affected by the fighting and occupation.
