The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine continues to document the damage to cultural heritage sites in Ukraine as a result of russian aggression.
According to information provided by regional and Kyiv city military administrations, in September, the total number of damaged cultural heritage sites increased by 22 and now stands at 1,169. Among them, 117 are of national importance, 983 of local importance, and 69 newly discovered.
Repeated strikes on previously damaged cultural heritage sites occurred in the Kherson and Sumy regions. New strikes were recorded in the Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Sumy, and Lviv regions.
To date, cultural heritage sites in 18 regions and Kyiv have suffered damage, including: 315 in the Kharkiv region, 154 in Kherson, 161 in Donetsk, 116 in Odesa, 65 in Chernihiv, 81 in the Kyiv region and Kyiv city, 49 in Zaporizhzhia, 41 in Mykolaiv, 41 in Dnipropetrovsk, 60 in Lviv, 31 in Luhansk, 29 in Sumy, 10 in Khmelnytskyi, 6 in Poltava, 4 in Vinnytsia, 4 in Zhytomyr, 1 in Kirovohrad, and 1 in Cherkasy.
As of the end of September 2024, almost the entire territory of Luhansk and significant parts of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Kherson regions remain under temporary occupation. This makes it impossible to accurately count the number of cultural heritage sites damaged during the fighting and occupation.
