1,179 cultural heritage sites in Ukraine have been damaged due to russian aggression

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications continues to document damage to Ukraine’s cultural heritage sites resulting from russian aggression.

According to data from regional and Kyiv city military administrations, the total number of damaged cultural heritage sites increased by 10 in October, bringing the total to 1,179 sites. Of these, 120 are of national importance, 990 are of local importance, and 69 are newly identified.

Repeated strikes on previously damaged cultural heritage sites occurred in the Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, while new strikes were reported in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.

To date, cultural heritage sites in 18 regions and Kyiv have suffered damage, including: 316 in Kharkiv region, 163 in Donetsk, 157 in Kherson, 116 in Odesa, 81 in Kyiv region and Kyiv city, 65 in Chernihiv, 60 in Lviv, 53 in Zaporizhzhia, 41 each in Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk, 31 in Luhansk, 29 in Sumy, 10 in Khmelnytskyi, 6 in Poltava, 4 each in Vinnytsia and Zhytomyr, and 1 each in Kirovohrad and Cherkasy.

As of late October 2024, nearly the entire territory of Luhansk and significant parts of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Kherson regions remain under temporary occupation. This prevents an accurate assessment of the total number of cultural heritage sites affected by  hostilities and occupation.
