Because of russian aggression, 1,464 objects of cultural infrastructure have already been damaged in Ukraine

The MCIP continues to record information about damage to cultural infrastructure in Ukraine because of russian aggression. As of April 25, 2023, 1,464 objects of cultural infrastructure have suffered losses, not including cultural heritage sites. Almost a third of them have been destroyed (523 objects).

However, in the last month, the total number of damaged objects of cultural infrastructure has increased by 91 objects, with the majority of them located in Kherson region (47 objects or 52%).

Cultural infrastructure has received the most losses and damages in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Creative hubs, libraries, museums, theaters, philharmonic halls, institutions of art education (art schools and colleges) in 210 ACs (amalgamated communities) have been damaged or destroyed , accounting for 14.3% of the total, in Vinnytsia (3%), Dnipropetrovsk (14%), Donetsk (85%), Zhytomyr (12%), Zakarpattia (2%), Zaporizhzhia (31%), Kyiv (27%), Luhansk (42%), Lviv (2%), Mykolaiv (42%), Odesa ( 3%), Sumy (45%), Kharkiv (36%), Kherson (35%), Khmelnytskyi (2%), Cherkasy (3%), Chernihiv (14%) regions and the city of Kyiv.

Overall, the following objects of cultural infrastructure have suffered:

  • creative hubs– 701;
  • libraries – 555;
  • museums and galleries – 77;
  • theaters and philharmonic halls – 23;
  • Institutions of art education – 108.

The most affected group of cultural infrastructure objects are creative hubs – 48% of the total number of cultural infrastructure facilities that have suffered damage or destruction.

 It should be noted that currently, almost the entire territory of Luhansk and significant parts of the territories of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk regions are still under temporary occupation, which makes it impossible to accurately calculate the number of cultural infrastructure objects that have suffered as a result of hostilities and occupation.
