Because of russian aggression, 1,599 cultural heritage sites and 2,415 cultural infrastructure facilities have been damaged in Ukraine

As of September 25, because of russian aggression in Ukraine, 1,599 cultural heritage sites and 2,415 cultural infrastructure facilities have been damaged or destroyed.

Among the affected heritage sites, 149 are classified as of national significance, 1,300 as of local importance, and 150 are newly identified heritage sites.

Damage has been recorded in 18 regions across the country. The greatest destruction to cultural heritage sites has occurred in:

  • Kharkiv region – 341,
  • Kherson region – 293,
  • Odesa region – 182,
  • Donetsk region – 173,
  • Kyiv region and the city of Kyiv – 154.

At the same time, 2,415 cultural infrastructure facilities have suffered damage due to shelling and active hostilities, with 491 of them completely destroyed.

The most severe losses to cultural infrastructure have been reported in the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Sumy, and Mykolaiv regions.

In total, the affected institutions include:

  • 1,175 cultural hubs and clubs,
  • 848 libraries,
  • 184 art education institutions,
  • 133 museums and galleries,
  • 50 theaters, cinemas, and philharmonic halls,
  • 9 nature and cultural reserves,
  • 11 parks and zoos,
  • 4 circuses,
  • 1 film studio in the city of Kyiv.

Destruction has been documented in 326 territorial communities across Ukraine. The highest number of affected communities is found in:

  • Donetsk region – 46 communities,
  • Sumy region – 37,
  • Kharkiv region – 33,
  • Chernihiv region – 31,
  • Zaporizhzhia region – 28,
  • Mykolaiv region – 23,
  • Dnipropetrovsk region – 22,
  • Kyiv region – 21,
  • Luhansk region – 12.

Almost the entire territory of the Luhansk region, as well as significant areas in the Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Kherson regions, remain under temporary occupation. This makes it impossible to accurately assess the full extent of damage to cultural institutions in those areas caused by hostilities and occupation.
