The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine continues to document the significant damage to the country’s cultural heritage sites and infrastructure caused by russia’s ongoing aggression.
As of May 25, 2025, based on reports from regional and Kyiv city military administrations, 1,482 cultural heritage sites have been damaged across Ukraine. These include 145 sites of national importance, 1,232 of local importance and 105 newly identified sites
Damage has been recorded in 18 regions and Kyiv. The highest numbers of damaged sites are in Kharkiv (335), Kherson (282), Donetsk (172), Odesa (159), Kyiv region and Kyiv city (106). Other regions like Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Lviv, and Sumy have also seen significant damage.
In addition, 2,302 cultural infrastructure facilities have been damaged, with 436 completely destroyed (18.6%).
The worst losses to cultural infrastructure have occurred in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy regions.
The largest group of affected institutions are cultural clubs, making up 49% of all damaged or destroyed institutions.
The breakdown of affected institutions is as follows:
- Libraries – 808
- Art education centers – 176
- Museums and galleries – 129
- Theaters, cinemas, and philharmonics – 48
- Nature and cultural reserves – 8
- Parks and zoos – 10
- Circuses – 4
- One film studio
Destruction has been widespread, affecting cultural institutions in 310 territorial communities, or 21% of all communities in Ukraine. The most heavily impacted regions include Vinnytsia (3.2%), Dnipropetrovsk (22%), Donetsk (91%), Zhytomyr (18%), Zakarpattia (1.6%), Zaporizhzhia (40.3%), Kirovohrad (4%), Kyiv (28.6%), Luhansk (46.2%), Lviv (5.5%), Mykolaiv (44.2%), Odesa (10%), Poltava (4%), Sumy (68.6%), Kharkiv (59%), Kherson (45%), Khmelnytskyi (18%), Cherkasy (6.1%), Chernihiv (51%), and the city of Kyiv.
Additionally, nearly all of Luhansk and significant parts of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Kherson regions remain under temporary occupation, preventing an accurate assessment of the total number of cultural heritage sites damaged during the ongoing hostilities and occupation.
