Due to russian aggression, 1,553 cultural heritage sites and 2,388 cultural infrastructure facilities have been damaged in Ukraine

As of August 25, due to russian aggression in Ukraine, 1,553 cultural heritage sites and 2,388 cultural infrastructure facilities have been damaged or destroyed. Among the affected cultural heritage sites: 148 are of national significance, 1,287 are of local significance, and 118 are newly identified sites.

Damage has been recorded across 18 regions of Ukraine. The greatest destruction of cultural heritage sites has occurred in: Kharkiv region – 340, Kherson region – 293, Odesa region – 181, Donetsk region – 173, and Kyiv region and the city of Kyiv – 112.

At the same time, 2,388 cultural infrastructure facilities have been damaged or destroyed as a result of shelling and active hostilities. Of these, 481 have been completely destroyed.

The cultural infrastructure has suffered the most significant losses in the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Sumy regions.

The affected facilities include:

  • 1,162 creative hubs,
  • 840 libraries,
  • 182 institutions of arts education,
  • 131 museums and galleries,
  • 49 theaters, cinemas, and philharmonic halls,
  • 9 nature and cultural reserves,
  • 10 parks and zoos,
  • 4 circuses.

Damage has been reported in 324 territorial communities across Ukraine, with the highest numbers recorded in: Donetsk region – 452, Luhansk region – 122, Sumy region – 37, Kharkiv region – 33, Dnipropetrovsk region – 23 and Zaporizhzhia region – 28.

Almost the entire territory of Luhansk region, as well as significant parts of Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Kherson regions, remain under temporary occupation. This makes it impossible to accurately assess the full extent of damage to cultural institutions in these areas due to hostilities and ongoing occupation.
