Due to russian aggression in Ukraine, 623 cultural heritage sites have been damaged

The MCIP continues to document the damage to cultural heritage sites in Ukraine as a result of russian aggression. From February 24, 2022 to May 15, 2023, a total of 623 immovable sites of cultural heritage have been damaged or destroyed. Among them are 80 of national importance, 484 of local importance, and 59 recently discovered sites.

Among them, architectural monuments make up 186 sites, sites of architectural and urban planning– 184, historical sites – 166, sites of architecture and history – 21, monumental art  sites – 17, urban planning and monumental art sites – 17, archeological sites – 16, sites of architecture, and urban planning with history – 6, urban planning sites – 5, sites of science and technology – 2, sites of garden and park art – 1, an architectural and urban planning, monumental art site – 1, an architecture, monumental art site – 1.

According to data from regional military administrations, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 22 sites have been completely destroyed, 492 sites have been partially damaged, and the extent of damage to 109 sites remains unknown.

Urgent measures have been taken on 85 sites, and 23 sites have been fully restored.

Sites of cultural heritage have been damaged or destroyed in 15 regions:

Kharkiv region – 206 damaged or destroyed sites of cultural heritage (Bohodukhiv district – 4; Izium district – 14; Krasnohrad district – 2; Lozova district – 1; Kharkiv district – 171; Chuhuiv district – 14). Among them are 8 of national importance, 193 of local importance, and 4 recently discovered sites of cultural heritage.

Donetsk region – 90 (Kramatorsk district – 33; Mariupol district – 24; Bakhmut district – 22, Pokrovsk district- 6; Volnovakha district – 4). Among them are 11 of national importance, 79 of local importance, and recently discovered sites of cultural heritage.

Kyiv region – 63 (Bila Tserkva district – 1; Brovary district – 2; Bucha district – 12; Vyshhorod district – 6, Kyiv city – 42). Among them are 2 of national importance, 16 of local importance, 3 recently discovered sites of cultural heritage in the region. Additionally, there are 13 of national importance, 21 of local importance, and 8 recently discovered sites of cultural heritage.

Chernihiv region – 62 (Chernihiv district – 54; Koriukivka district – 1; Novgorod-Siverskyi district – 2; Nizhyn district – 4; Pryluky district – 1). Among them are 23 of national importance, 33 of local importance, and 6 recently discovered sites of cultural heritage.

Kherson region – 58 (Beryslav district – 8; Bilozerka district – 2; Kakhovka district – 32; Kherson district – 16). Among them are 9 of national importance, 24 of local importance, and 25 recently discovered sites of cultural heritage.

Zaporizhzhia region – 33 sites of local importance (Vasylivka district – 12; Zaporizhzihia district – 11; Polohy district – 10).

Dnipropetrovsk region – 28 (Dnipro district – 15; Kryvyi Rih district – 1; Nikopol district– 12). Among them are 1 of national importance, 21 of local importance, and 6 recently discovered sites of cultural heritage.

Sumy region – 23 (Konotop district – 4; Okhtyrka district – 12; Sumy district – 6; Shostka district – 1). Among them are 4 of national importance and 19 of local importance.

Mykolaiv region – 22 (Mykolaiv district – 22). Among them are 3 of national importance, 15 of local importance, and 4 recently discovered sites of cultural heritage.

Luhansk region – 19 sites of local importance (Svatove district – 1; Sievierodonetsk district – 17, Shchastia district – 1).

Khmelnytskyi region – 6 (Shepetivka district – 1; Khmelnytskyi district – 5). Among them are 3 of local importance and 3 recently discovered cultural heritage sites.

Odesa region – 5 (Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district – 1; Odesa district– 4). Among them are 2 of national importance and 3 of local importance.

Vinnytsia region – 4 (Vinnytsia district – 4). Among them are 1 of national importance and 3 of local importance.

Zhytomyr region – 2 (Korosten district – 2). Among them are 1 of national importance and 1 of local importance.

Lviv region – 2 (Zolochiv district – 1; Stryi district – 1). Among them are 2 of national importance.

As of mid-May 2023,  according to the regional military and the Kyiv city military administrations, no damage to the cultural heritage sites due to military aggression has been reported in the territory of Zakarpattia, Cherkasy, Chernivtsi, Rivne, Volyn, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Ternopil regions.

Out of the 623 damaged/destroyed sites of cultural heritage, 576 are located in areas where hostilities took place or in the temporarily occupied territories, namely Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Luhansk, Odesa, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Kherson and Chernihiv regions. Among these sites, there are 71 sites of national importance, 460 sites of local importance, and 45 are recently discovered sites of cultural heritage.

However, it should be noted that almost the entire territory of Luhansk and significant parts of the territories of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions are under temporary occupation, which makes it impossible to calculate the exact number of cultural heritage sites that have been damaged during hostilities and occupation.
