Due to russian aggression in Ukraine, 835 cultural heritage sites have been affected

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy continues to document the damage to cultural heritage sites in Ukraine due to russian aggression. During the period from February 24, 2022, to September 25, 2023, 835 cultural heritage sites have been destroyed or damaged. Among them, there are 118 sites of national importance, 653 of local importance, and 64 recently discovered  ones.

Among them, architectural heritage sites account for 256 objects, architectural and urban planning sites – 246, historical sites – 199, architectural and historical sites – 32, monumental art – 19, urban planning and monumental art – 17, archaeology – 20, architectural and urban planning, historical sites – 37, urban planning – 5, science and technology – 2, garden and park art – 1, architectural and urban planning, monumental art – 1, architectural and monumental art – 1.

According to the data from the Regional Military Administrations, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 23 sites have been completely destroyed, 648 sites have been partially damaged, and the extent of damage remains unknown to 164 objects.

Cultural heritage sites have been damaged or destroyed in the following regions:

  • Kharkiv region – 207 damaged or destroyed cultural heritage sites (Bohodukhiv district – 4; Izium district – 14; Krasnohrad district – 2; Lozova district – 1; Kharkiv district – 172; Chuhuiv district – 14). Among them, there are 10 of national importance, 193 of local importance, and 4 recently discovered cultural heritage sites.
  • Odesa region – 112 (Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district – 1; Odesa district – 77; Izmail district – 1). Among them, there are 18 of national importance and 85 of local importance.
  • Donetsk region – 111 (Kramatorsk district – 36; Mariupol district – 26; Bakhmut district – 28; Pokrovsk district – 17; Volnovakha district – 4). Among them, there are 12 objects of national importance and 99 of local importance.
  • Kherson region – 80 (Beryslav district – 10; Bilozerka – 2; Kakhovka – 32; Kherson – 36). Among them, there are 12 of national importance, 43 of local importance, and 25 recently discovered objects of cultural heritage.
  • Chernihiv region – 70 (Chernihiv district – 63; Koriukivka – 1; Novhorod-Siverskyi – 2; Nizhyn – 3; Pryluky – 1). Among them, there are 27 of national importance, 37 of local importance, and 6 recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Kyiv region – 69 (Bila Tserkva district – 1; Brovary district – 5; Bucha district – 14; Vyshhorod district – 6, Kyiv City – 43). Among them, there are 16 of national importance, 37 of local importance, and 16 recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Zaporizhzhia region – 35 sites of local importance (Vasylivka district – 12; Zaporizhzhia district – 12; Polohy district – 10; Melitopol district – 1).
  • Lviv region – 33 (Zolochiv district – 1; Stryi district – 1; Frankivsk district – 29; Halych district – 2). Among them, there are 2 of national importance and 31 of local importance.
  • Dnipropetrovsk region – 28 (Dnipro district – 15; Kryvyi Rih district- 1; Nikopol district – 12). Among them are 1 of national importance, 21 of local importance, and 6 recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Luhansk region – 28 objects of local importance (Svatove district – 5; Sievierodonetsk district – 21; Shchastia district – 2).
  • Sumy region – 25 (Konotop district – 5; Okhtyrka district – 12; Sumy district – 7; Shostka district – 1). Among them are 5 of national importance and 20 of local importance.
  • Mykolaiv region – 22 (Mykolaiv district – 22). Among them are 3 of national importance, 15 of local importance, and 4 recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Khmelnytskyi region – 9 (Shepetivka district – 1; Khmelnytskyi district – 8). Among them are 1 of national importance, 4 of local importance, and 3 recently discovered cultural heritage objects.
  • Vinnytsia region – 4 (Vinnytsia district – 4). Among them are 1 of national importance and 3 of local importance.
  • Zhytomyr region – 2 (Korosten district – 2). Among them are 1 of national importance and 1 of local importance.
