During a missile attack on Lviv, russia struck the buffer zone of a UNESCO World Heritage site

On the night of September 3-4, 2024, more than 188 destroyed buildings were discovered as a result of the rocket attack on Lviv by the aggressor country Russia federation. At least 19 objects have the status of a cultural heritage monument of local importance, and 154 residential buildings, 7 educational institutions, cultural institutions, sports and medical institutions were also damaged.

All the damaged buildings are located in the historical area and in the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Lviv – the Ensemble of the historic centre”, which from 2023 is on the List of World Heritage in Danger and on the International List of Cultural Properties under Enhanced Protection, in accordance with the Second Protocol to of the Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Values in the Event of Armed Conflict.

So far, it has been possible to examine 19 architectural monuments of local importance that were damaged as a result of the attack. Among them are historic villas from the beginning of the 20th century, the building of the Ukrainian women’s gymnasium “Native School”, as well as the house of the writer and journalist Ludovik Hirsch.

To assess the extent of damage and determine further steps for restoration, the local authorities will create a special commission with the participation of specialists in the protection of cultural heritage.
