Oleksandr Tkachenko: Ukraine strives to become a full-fledged participant in European cultural life

As a candidate country for EU membership, Ukraine fully shares the general political goals and priorities of the European Union in the field of culture. They are clearly defined in the New Strategic Agenda 2019-2024 and in the New European Agenda for Culture.

This was stated by the Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko during a joint meeting of the Government of Ukraine and the Commissioners of the European Union on February 2.

 “Ukraine strives to reinforce cultural ties with the European Union and to become a full-fledged participant in European cultural life. For example, through the expansion of its participation in European initiatives in the field of culture, in particular the European Capital of Culture and the New European Bauhaus programs. In general, projects of collaboration between cultural institutions and projects of the EU and Ukraine, as we saw during the war, have an excellent perspective. This is cooperation between museums, joint exhibitions, concerts, films, cultural events”, said Oleksandr Tkachenko, Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

The Minister emphasized that Ukraine and the EU should cooperate in the field of culture and creative industries on the following:

  • fostering of long-term and mutually beneficial partnerships, implementation of joint projects;
  • development of the market of cultural services in Ukraine and the invitation to participate in it of the key players of the EU cultural sector;
  • creation and implementation of joint programs of creative exchanges and academic programs in the field of art education;
  • development of mechanisms for the return of creative personnel to Ukraine.

Today, the “Creative Europe” program remains an important tool for supporting Ukrainian culture and creative industries. Currently, Ukraine hopes to get full access to participation in the “Media” and “Cross-Sectoral Direction” sub-programs.
