On October 21, the Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, Mykola Tochytskyi held an online conversation with the Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Lee Satterfield. The parties discussed current issues of protection of Ukraine’s cultural heritage, which is suffering significant destruction due to russian aggression, as well as strengthening cooperation in the field of strategic communications.
One of the key topics was the inclusion of cultural heritage preservation in the agenda of the Ukraine Recovery Conference, to be held in Rome in the summer of 2025. This issue should get proper attention of the international community, as Ukraine’s cultural heritage is not only the foundation of our people’s identity but also an integral part of global culture.
During the conversation, the parties discussed specific measures to preserve cultural property, including the construction of specialized storage facilities to protect museum collections from bombings. Additionally, the digitization of cultural heritage plays an important role. It will help to preserve information for future generations and promote Ukraine globally.
The parties paid special attention to cooperation in the identification and repatriation of stolen cultural artifacts.
An important aspect of the conversation was the topic of strategic communications. Countering disinformation is only a part of a broader efforts. It is now essential not only to defend but to act proactively by shaping strategic narratives.
Therefore, Ukraine and the USA will closely cooperate to protect Ukraine’s cultural heritage and enhance strategic communications.
