Andrii Nadzhos, Deputy Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine for European Integration, emphasized that despite the war, Ukraine is committed to media reform, improving its press freedom ranking, and supporting independent journalism.

“The MCSC is committed to protecting journalists and fighting disinformation. Freedom of speech is the foundation of democracy and national security. These efforts are crucial for the country’s development and strengthening its positive global reputation”, said the Deputy Minister.

The discussion also addressed the major challenges facing the Ukrainian media amid russian aggression, with a particular focus on holding russia accountable for crimes against journalists through the International Criminal Court.

The issue of funding for Ukrainian media was also raised, especially following the recent suspension of support from USAID. Andrii Nadzhos provided updates on efforts to tackle this challenge and expressed gratitude to the European Union for its support of independent media. He also spoke about national sanctions against russian cultural figures and propagandists, calling for stronger international sanctions on russia for its crimes against journalists.

The Deputy Minister invited representatives of Reporters Without Borders to join the Kyiv StratCom Forum at the end of April, a key event for Ukraine’s information campaign.

Representatives of Reporters Without Borders praised the progress of Ukrainian media, recognizing that, despite the ongoing challenges, they are actively countering russian propaganda and enhancing Ukraine’s reputation as a democratic nation on the global stage.
