Tetyana Berezhna held an online meeting with the Spanish counterpart: culture as a frontline of resistance and resilience

On September 19, Acting Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, Tetyana Berezhna, held an online meeting with the Minister of Culture of the Kingdom of Spain, Ernest Urtasun Domènech.

The parties discussed key priorities for cultural cooperation, international support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war, and preparations for participation in major international cultural events.

Ernest Urtasun expressed solidarity with Ukraine and reaffirmed Spain’s unwavering support on international platforms.

In response, Tetyana Berezhna expressed gratitude to Spain for its consistent support and emphasized the role of culture as a vital instrument of national resilience and resistance.

“Today, culture is the voice of Ukraine. By supporting Ukrainian projects, the international community is standing up for European values and reinforcing Europe as a space of freedom and resilience,” she said.

The Acting Minister informed her Spanish counterpart about the key outcomes of the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC2025) held in Rome. In particular, she expressed gratitude to Spain as a co-founder of the Cultural Resilience Alliance and extended an invitation to participate in the Alliance’s inaugural meeting, set to take place in the near future.

In this context, Tetyana Berezhna also shared updates on preparations for the Second International Conference “Cooperation for Resilience”, scheduled for November in Copenhagen under Denmark’s Presidency of the EU Council. During the event, Ukraine will launch the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Fund, established to attract international financial support for the restoration and preservation of Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

As a reminder, the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications recently signed a Memorandum on the establishment of the Fund with ALIPH.

One of the key topics of discussion was Ukraine’s participation in the UNESCO World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development – MONDIACULT, which will begin on September 29 in Barcelona. Ernest Urtasun noted that a record number of delegations is expected and stressed the importance of Ukraine’s high-level representation at the event.
