On December 16, the Council of the European Union adopted the 9th package of sanctions. The Council banned broadcasting of four additional russian media outlets on the territory of the EU, namely NTV/NTV Mir, Rossiya 1, REN TV and Pervyi Kanal.
“I welcome the decision of the EU Council. We lobbied for banning of these channels for a long time. This decision is, first of all, important for the information space of Europe itself, in order to stop poisoning its society with false information and propaganda of Kremlin’s machine. We also continue to work on our Information Ramstein initiative in order to build a strong joint information front with partners to effectively counter russian propaganda and disinformation,” said Oleksandr Tkachenko, Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.
These outlets included in the sanctions package are under permanent direct or indirect control of the leadership of the russian federation and have been used by latter for its continuous and concerted disinformation and war propaganda actions, which legitimize russia’s aggression and undermine support for Ukraine.
