The MCIP continues to attract international assistance for the digitalization and preservation of cultural heritage objects that have been damaged due to russian aggression

On June 5, the Deputy Ministers of Culture and Information Policy Anastasia Bondar and Kateryna Chuyeva held a meeting with the Head of the UNESCO Office in Ukraine Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, the French expert in 3D scanning Emmanuel Durand and the Kyiv architect Serhii Revenko.

During the meeting, Emmanuel Durand presented a 3D laser scanner, which was generously donated to Ukraine by the German company Zoller & Fröhlich GmbH. The French expert has been actively assisting Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. In his work, he uses a special laser scanner, and the captured images help preserve the detailed appearance of buildings or required objects in a digital format.

“For us, it is crucial to continue attracting international support, especially in the field of preserving cultural heritage in Ukraine. Such a scanner and the results of its work on sites can be used for detailed documentation of damages, the creation and development of necessary documents for the restoration and reconstruction of cultural objects, as well as for disseminating information about the damage caused to objects of cultural heritage and infrastructure in Ukraine due to russian aggression,” said Anastasia Bondar.

“3D scanning is an essential tool that helps us preserve our heritage. It enables us to uncover and explore the secrets of the past, document the smallest details of an object’s condition and damages, which is particularly crucial during the war, both for restoration and reconstruction programs, and for documenting war crimes. This allows us to reproduce objects with precision, capturing even the smallest details, while preserving them in a digital format for future generations,” said Kateryna Chuyeva.

During the meeting, the requirements for the qualifications of professionals who wish to use this scanning device for objects of culture scanning in Ukraine were also discussed. The organization of practical training sessions for Ukrainian experts was also addressed.

On June 7, Emmanuel Durand conducted the first training session, which was attended by employees from the “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” and “Sofia Kyivska”, representatives of the Kyiv City State Administration, and members of the civil society sector. During two weeks, the French expert will continue to conduct theoretical and practical training sessions for Ukrainian professionals.
