russia has already committed 434 crimes against the cultural heritage of Ukraine

As of July 22, 2022, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine has recorded 434 cases of russian war crimes against Ukrainian cultural heritage.

In total, 129 objects of cultural heritage were destructed and damaged as a result of shellings by the occupiers. Among them are 22 sites of national importance, 100 of local importance and 7 newly discovered cultural heritage sites. 105 objects of valuable historical buildings were also damaged.

According to the functional purpose, the cultural objects that were destructed or damaged by the occupiers:

  • 149 religious buildings, 50 of them are registered as monuments of history, architecture and urban planning or valuable historical buildings;

  • 46 memorial monuments in honor of historical persons and events of the 19th – early 21st centuries;

  • 33 museums and reserves;

  • 41 libraries;

  • 65 cultural centers, theaters, cinemas and other cultural institutions.

In total, crimes committed by the russian federation were recorded in 15 regions of Ukraine:

  • 99 – in Kharkiv region;

  • 97 – in Donetsk region;

  • 79 – in Kyiv region;

  • 44 – in Luhansk region;

  • 38 – in Chernihiv region;

  • 28 – in Sumy region;

  • 16 – in Zaporizhzhia region;

  • 8 – in Mykolaiv region;

  • 6 – in Zhytomyr region;

  • 5 – in the city of Kyiv;

  • 5 – in Kherson region;

  • 4 – in Dnipropetrovsk region,

  • 2 – in Odesa region,

  • 2 – in Vinnytsia region,

  • 1 – in Lviv region.

Information about russian war crimes against cultural heritage continues to be received.  The MCIP specialists check and systematize the received data and publish it on a special website.

“All materials will be used as evidence for criminal proceedings against russian criminals,” emphasized Kateryna Chuyeva, Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

For reminding, destruction of cultural heritage sites is a war crime under the 1945 Hague Convention.
